The new NHS MenB jab for school-leavers & freshers

From July 2026 the NHS is running a one-off Meningitis B (MenB) vaccination through pharmacies to protect the age group most at risk before the new term. Use the 30-second checker below to see whether you qualify here in Timperley & Altrincham — and if you fall outside the NHS group, we’ll point you to a private route. Where do you fit?

The free NHS MenB jab is being offered to one particular group of young people for autumn 2026.

This is general guidance, not a clinical decision or a booking. The pharmacist confirms NHS eligibility against acceptable evidence when you attend. Eligibility and dates follow UKHSA and NHS England / Community Pharmacy England guidance (linked below).

Who the NHS is vaccinating this autumn

It’s a deliberately narrow, one-off offer for the age band where the risk is highest. You qualify on the NHS if you’re in one of these groups and haven’t had a MenB course in the last 5 years:

In school

Year 13 pupils

Anyone in school Year 13 — born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008 — qualifies, whether or not you are heading to university afterwards.

Off to uni

First-time freshers under 25

New undergraduates starting their first year of university this autumn who are under 25 (born on or after 21 July 2001). Students arriving from overseas for their first year are covered too.

Into halls

New college students in halls

People beginning further education for the first time and moving into halls or shared residential accommodation, again if they are under 25 (born on or after 21 July 2001).

Already had MenB? If you’re in an eligible group but completed a full course in the last 5 years, you won’t need it again now. Bring proof of your school, college or university place and the pharmacist will confirm everything on the day.

The reason behind the new programme

It’s a response to recent meningococcal disease activity and a long-standing pattern: new university students living in close quarters — think shared halls and freshers’ events — carry a risk of meningococcal disease around seven times higher than peers of the same age who don’t go to university. The illness can move from first symptoms to something life-threatening within hours, so the goal is simple — get the at-risk group two doses of MenB before term begins.

Outside the NHS group? Private MenB is still an option

The NHS offer is tightly defined. If you don’t fall inside it — perhaps you’re a returning student, over 25, or a parent sorting protection for your family — you can have exactly the same vaccine privately. It’s the same two-dose course, at least 28 days apart, arranged at our pharmacy. Get in touch and we’ll talk you through it.

MenB FAQ

Common questions about the student MenB jab

Which students can get the free MenB vaccine?

Three groups for the autumn-2026 rollout: school Year 13 pupils (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008); first-time university undergraduates who are under 25 (born on or after 21 July 2001), including students coming from abroad; and people starting college for the first time and moving into halls of residence, again under 25. Our quick checker above shows where you land.

Do I have to pay for it?

No — if you fall into one of the eligible groups the two-dose course is free on the NHS. If you are outside those groups the NHS will not fund it for you on this programme, but you can arrange the same vaccine privately.

When can I book my MenB appointment in Timperley?

The NHS pharmacy service goes live on 20 July 2026 and runs until the end of March 2027, with first doses available up to 31 December 2026. We will open appointment slots nearer the launch — register your interest now and we will message you the moment booking is live.

Why are two doses needed, and how long between them?

A single dose is not enough for reliable protection. You need two doses spaced at least 28 days apart, and it takes roughly two more weeks after the second for immunity to build — so it is worth starting the course well before you move away for term.

I have just finished my first year — am I too late?

This rollout is aimed at people starting university or college for the first time, plus Year 13 pupils. Returning or later-year students are generally outside the NHS offer, but you can still protect yourself privately with the same vaccine — we are happy to arrange that.

I had MenB as an infant. Is this the same thing?

The MenB doses given to babies in the routine childhood schedule are separate from this one-off teenage and student offer, which targets the age group now most at risk. If you are in an eligible group and have not had a full MenB course in the last 5 years, you can have it; if you have had a recent course you likely do not need it again yet.

I am coming to study from abroad — does the offer cover me?

Yes — international students under 25 starting their first year at a university in England are included, even if you do not land in the UK until September. Bring something that shows your university place, such as an offer letter or confirmation email.

Isn’t this the same as the MenACWY jab I had at school?

No. MenACWY protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y and is the one offered routinely to teenagers (and required for Hajj and Umrah). MenB protects against group B, which this new student programme specifically targets. They are different vaccines and you may be advised to have both.

What proof will I need to bring?

For the university and college routes, bring evidence that you are starting your course this autumn — an offer letter, a confirmation email, or a screenshot of your place is fine. The pharmacist confirms your eligibility against this when you attend.

I am not in the eligible group — can I still have MenB?

Yes. MenB is available to anyone privately. That is useful for older or returning students, parents arranging protection for the family, or anyone who simply wants the reassurance. Get in touch and we will arrange the two-dose course for you.
